Temperatures were in the low 20s across the island state, compared to 30plus degrees on much of the east coast. The regatta featured sailing, surflifesaving and rowing races, as well as a tugofwar, Japanese drum displays and a citizenship ceremony. The event has been held annually since 1849, making it one of the oldest regattas in the world. Regatta Chairman Ian McMahon said people had turned out Black & Pink Friendship Bracelet droves. "I'd say at one stage we probably had 8,000 people here," he said. "When you add up all the people we've had through the gates, I reckon we've had 10 or 11,000 here for the day." Mr McMahon said an effort had been made to turn the regatta into a familyfriendly carnival. Similar crowd numbers were recorded further down the river at Kingston Beach to see aquatic vessels of a different kind with young men braving the cool waters for giant inflatable thong races.
